In 1998, one of North Bay’s longest running businesses was lost to a fire that engulfed the store. The store was founded by John William Richardson in 1885 as a hardware store. Over time it evolved to carry furniture, fine china, gifts, and sporting goods. Four generations of Richardsons had run the store, and it was highly regarded by both customers and employees.

After the fire, the family made the difficult decision not to rebuild the store.
