History of North Bay


1st Floor Permanent Exhibit

North Bay’s rich history begins with the Nipissing people and progresses through time with a focus on local industrial and military history. Model trains circle the museum on a track located above displays, and visitors can try a variety of interactive displays including a historic gas pump model. 

Lumber Industry
Explores the development of the lumber industry and features artifacts from the John Fraser shipwreck.

Railways
Explores the development of the railway in North Bay with a focus on the history of the Canadian Pacific Railway station.

Fur Trade
Focuses on the Nipissing people, voyageur life, and the local fur trade including Fort Laronde.

Firefighting

1928 Bickle Fire Engine on display and examines the history of the North Bay fire department, along with some of North Bay’s biggest fires.

Military
Outlines North Bay’s contributions to the First and Second World Wars and within the modern era.

2nd Floor Permanent Exhibit

Step back in time in this immersive exhibit that brings visitors onto the streets of North Bay’s downtown during the 1920s–1940s. Displays include replica storefronts based on historic downtown businesses, a theatre, and more! Temporary exhibits are also displayed on the second floor.
