Pride of The Bay
“Pride of The Bay” (1944)
Submitted by: Lisa DeMarco
Shown here is Anthony DeMarco playing for Garland’s. For the people of North Bay, baseball games were a source of entertainment and an opportunity to socialize. There are possibly 300 people in this photograph, watching from the first base line. Anthony said it was routine to have 1000 people at a game. If you look in the top left hand corner, you can see he did hit the ball - Anthony always pointed this out.

I was quite impressed by this sport photo. To capture the batter, Anthony DeMarco, striking the ball in action required skill in timing and exposure setting. What is amazing is the large crowd of baseball fans. Was this an exception at the time or was a crowd of this size a regular happening? Whatever the situation, this photograph of a member of the athletic DeMarco family is dynamically presented.
