Shannon Farm

Shannon Dairy FarmA.1.jpg

This photo shows the owner of the farm, Brookfield Shannon his wife, and four of his five daughters, around 1910.

The Shannon farm land was located at the north end of Main Street in Callander where it meets old Highway 11. Originally, it was bought by Alexander Shannon when he emigrated to Callander with his wife and two boys from Windermere, in Muskoka. Listed on the 1891 Canada census as a druggist, he bought a house on Main Street and the land at the north end of town. He and his wife separated and he moved to British Columbia before he developed the farm land.

Brookfield Shannon, the eldest son, took over the farm land and during the 1890’s and 1900’s, developed it into a working farm. He married in 1907 and the couple built a small house and barn. When the local dairy provider went out of business, the Shannon farm began home delivery, which lasted until the late 1940’s.

One of Brookfield’s daughters and her husband occupied the house and ran a riding stable until 1987.  After that it was operated as a hobby farm, until the land was sold.  It is now occupied by St. Theresa’s School and the Shannondale Pet Hospital.
