Jewish citizens of North Bay have always been very active in community and political life. Frequently, the only Jewish member of a service group was elected as President or chairperson. As early as 1916, Jewish immigrant Max Clavir was elected to City Council.
Herb Brown was named Citizen of the Year in 1985 by the Kiwanis Club. The Nugget article about the event listed the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, St. Joseph’s Hospital Board, Cancer Society and chairperson of the first Board of Governors of Nipissing University in his “resume.”
