Most of the earliest Jewish families to settle in North Bay came from Russia. After landing in Montreal, they followed the CPR to North Bay. Many set up business as junk or scrap metal traders, travelling to Sturgeon Falls, Kirkland Lake and other frontier towns opened up by the railroad and mining strikes. The families settled along Oak Street, in an area which also included Chinese and Syrian immigrants.
